Ελληνική online διαμαρτυρία στο noepatents.gr
Η ομάδα epatents του HeLLUG στη προσπάθεια της να κάνει γνωστό το πρόβλημα των πατεντών λογισμικού, τόσο σε πολιτικό όσο και σε ατομικό επίπεδο, ξεκίνησε δυναμικά μια ελληνική διαμαρτυρία ενάντια στις πατέντες λογισμικού:
Η διαμαρτυρία γίνεται με συλλογή online υπογραφών και απευθύνεται Κυβερνήσεις Ελλάδας και Κύπρου, στο Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο και στο Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο.
Συμμετέχοντας στην διαμαρτυρία δίνετε νόημα στις προσπάθειες μας και περνάτε δυνατό μήνυμα σε όλες τις κατευθύνσεις. Με τη διαμαρτυρία στοχεύουμε σε μια πιο δυνατή προσπάθεια και παρουσία στα πολιτικά δρώμενα σχετικά με τις πατέντες λογισμικού, ώστε να μπορέσουμε να πλησιάσουμε φορείς και πολιτικούς που έχουν λόγο στις εξελίξεις του νομοσχεδίου.
Τις επόμενες μέρες θα ξεκινήσουμε και καμπάνια με συμβολικό κλείσιμο ιστοσελίδων (αλλάζοντας την αρχική σελίδα προσωπικών αλλά και επαγγελματικών μας), με σκοπό να διαδοθεί η διαμαρτυρία.
Ελπίζουμε στη βοήθεια σας για να γίνουν γνωστά όλα αυτά:
* Αν είστε μέλος κάποιων mailing list ή forum, ενημερώστε τα άλλα μέλη γράφοντας ένα email ή κάνοντας forward αυτό το μήνυμα.
* Αν είστε webmaster σε κάποια σελίδα, κάντε link στη διαμαρτυρία (αν ξέρετε κάποιο webmaster, πείτε του να κάνει link!)
* Αν ξέρετε κάποιο δημοσιογράφο, ενημερώστε τον για τη διαμαρτυρία και τις προσπάθειες μας και φέρτε τον σε επαφή μαζί μας.
* Αν έχετε κάποιο γνωστό σε κάποιο πολιτικό γραφείο ή υπουργείο σχετικό με το νομοσχέδιο, ενημερώστε τον για όλα όσα συμβαίνουν.

Just to show how stupid the software patend is, I would suggest that the Greek goverment applies for a patend for the use of the greek language. Since almost all new languages make extensive use of the Greek vocabulary to derive words for their own use (especialy in science) it would be easy money for Greece if we get this patent. I wonder how Microsoft would eliminate words of Greek origin in Windows etc.

Hey, I wanted to ask you guys something (it’s a rhetorical question, the articles in this site give good answers): why do you think they try to pass this law about patents? I think that all this has to do with competitiveness in software industry and of course… money. The bottom line is that you don’t want your competitors to use your software, your ideas. Otherwise you may find yourself out of business soon enough.
Of course I don’t like the idea of using patents at all, but uder the given circumstances what else can we do? It’s very easy to say “NO to patents” but you have to suggest something else. Also, ironically, aren’t we a bit of hypocrites, in the sence of: if you had a software business, would you reveal your secrets to your competitors? Or you would keep them for yourself? Would you like others to use your ideas in developing? Or you would try to discourage them from doing so?

Your conclusion contradicts the fact that there are successful software companies in Europe, despite the absence of software patents. In fact, small companies will go out of business when they find themshelves having to spend money on patent filing and litigations.
There solution is already there: the traditional copyright that applies to a single instance of a software implementation (as opposed to the ideas used in that implementation, which is what is exlusively granted with software patents).
I’ve seen that you have some nice fractals in your homepage. How would you feel if before coding your fractal ideas, you would have to go through all the existing software patents to make sure you do not violate any of them? Would that make you more productive or would it make you more innovative?
Even worst, how would you feel if you came up on your own with an idea for a terrific fractal, only to find out that you’re are not permitted to use your own idea, only because ti is already patented? Sure they made an effort to come up with the idea, but you did as well — yet you have to pay them for using your own idea!
